The main function of a piston is to transmit the force exerted by the burning of charge to the connecting rod. Since the pistons move backwards and forward under high temperatures and pressures, therefore, they should have very good heat conduction and wear resistance, and should be of lightweight. Hence Engine pistons are usually made of aluminium alloy.
